The Arkansas Craft School takes great pride in the quality of its workshops and its exceptional faculty. Every year we bring master crafts people from across Arkansas and the nation, to teach a wide variety of craft and art classes at our school in Mountain View Ar. Many are also from our own Stone County, which is particularly rich with exceptional crafts people. Today we would like to highlight one of our instructors, master woodworker Alan Carter, who will be teaching Woodturning Design Concepts – August 29-31.

Alan Carter is a musician, painter, furniture maker and woodturner. He holds a music degree from Indiana University, has had a 22 year career as a landscape painter, and another 10 years in furniture design. His discovery of woodturning in 2009 got him “hooked” and so he began yet a new chapter in his very creative life.
Alan’s uniquely creative and elegant sculptural approach to woodturning draws on his extensive experience in fine art and design. “I’m more interested in the visual impact of a piece as an artistic statement and less on its functionality.” “I just want to create interesting dynamic works of art. Pieces that will cause people to stop and think and see woodturning in a new and different way.”

Although Alan’s personal work emphasizes sculptural elements, his workshop, Woodturning Design Concepts will cover all styles of woodturning. This class will take participants through the creative process of developing an idea into fully realized finished piece. Beginning with a simple quick sketch, students will design a project of their own choosing. Instruction, guidance and advice will be provided along the way, while working through the challenges each decision presents. Emphasis will be placed on remaining open to shifts in thinking and potentially radical changes in directions to allow the craft artists to embrace design opportunities as they arise and to stay in creative flow.

Alan is often a featured demonstrator at woodturning symposia, such as AAW (American Association of Woodturners), Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild, SWAT (Southwest Association of Woodturners). Alan teaches at schools around the nation Arrowmont, John C Campbell Folk School to name a few. His work has been featured in Woodturning Magazine, Woodturning Design, and AAW Journal.
