Mondays at the Old Indepdence Regional Museum 2016

Old Indepedence MuseumOld Independence Regional Museum is excited to announce “Mondays at the Museum,” a day camp for rising 1st through 6th graders to take place each Monday in June. “Day camps are a fun, education experience for students,” said Humanities Educator Amelia Bowman. The camps give history minded children an opportunity to delve deeper into subjects than a classroom setting allows.

Monday mornings in June (beginning June 6th) will be for rising 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders. These will be half day programs beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at noon. Afternoons will be for rising 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. These will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The museum will provide a snack during each camp. The cost for each program is $15 per student per Monday or $50 for all four programs. Each Monday is limited to 25 participants.

The themes for each Monday are as follows:
June 6 – Homesteading
June 13–World War II
June 20—The White River
June 27 – Native American Foods

The first Monday, June 6th, will focus on how homesteaders would have started a new life and what they would have needed to survive in a new place. During the program students will be able to milk a mechanical cow, hand gin cotton, hand mill rice, plant their own vegetable, and create their own homestead.

On June 13th, students will learn about World War II, how it affected the home front, and what life like during the war. Each participant will decorate a wooden plane and make silly putty, a WWII era invention.

June 20th will focus on the importance of the White River in our region. Topics such as settlement, transportation, and recreation on the river will be discussed. In addition, each student will make a cane pole and fishing lure. Young students will also make a canoe while older students will build a bridge.

The final Monday, June 27th, will feature foods of Native Americans. Students will learn about foods native to the Americas and help in preparing Native American dishes. Participants will then sample each food.

“Day Camps are great way for students to get a hands on education while learning how world events shaped local history,” said Bowman. Sign up early as space is limited.
