Fulton County

mammothFulton County was established in 1842 from lands taken from Izard County.  It was named for William S. Fulton, the last governor of Arkansas Territory.  After a temporary seat of justice was set up in the home of Peter Grounds, the first courthouse was erected at Salem, which had previously been called Pilot’s Knob.

mammoth spring The best known attraction in the region is Mammoth Spring State Park, in the extreme northeast corner of Fulton County.  The state’s largest natural spring flows nine million gallons of fresh water hourly, creating the Spring River.  The park includes a restored 1886 train station with exhibits, an official Arkansas Welcome Center, early hydroelectric power plant and dam, trails, picnic area and playgrounds.  Other county attractions include fishing and canoeing on the Spring and Strawberry rivers, commercial camping, niche shopping and live musical productions in both Salem and Mammoth Spring.
