downtown batesvilleIndependence County was created in 1820, from Lawrence County.  Originally, it covered all or parts of 12 present counties. Batesville, originally called Poke Bayou, has always served as the county seat.  White River commerce and the Old Southwest Trail helped make Batesville an early trade center.

museum Attractions include two historic districts (homes from the 1840s), Old Independence Regional Museum (historic treasures and archives from a 12-county region), Mark Martin NASCAR Museum, Batesville Speedway (modern dirt track where Mark Martin started his racing career), museumMain Street (vintage downtown with antique shops, restaurants and niche shopping), golf courses, river activities, walking trails, family parks and two college campuses.
