Jackson County

court houseJackson County was formed in 1829 from territory taken from Independence County.  It was named for Andrew Jackson, then president of the nation.  The county seat was moved three times before 1854, when a booming riverport town named Jacksonport became the seat of justice.  When the railroad bypassed Jacksonport in the 1870s, Newport soon became the center of area commerce and won the county seat in 1891.

woods Travel attractions today include Jacksonport State Park (restored courthouse, exhibits, White River access, camping, trails, picnic areas, sandy beach and restored paddlewheel riverboat), Newport (museums, restored railroad depot, historic homes, a college campus, Victorian courthouse and the state’s only display of White River pearls). The area is also known for its great fishing and duck hunting.
