Lawrence County is the state’s second oldest political district, created by the Missouri Territory in 1815, when Arkansas was a part of Missouri. Originally, the county covered about one-half of the present state of Arkansas, plus the southern part of Missouri. A total of 31 Arkansas counties were carved from the original Lawrence, which is often called the “Mother of Counties.” It was named for Capt. James Lawrence, a naval officer killed in the War of 1812.
Davidsonville was the first county seat and became the site of the state’s first post office and federal land office. Other towns which have served as county seats include Smithville, Clover Bend, Powhatan, and presently – Walnut Ridge.
