Step into Arkansas history at Powhatan Historic State Park, where the past still feels remarkably close. Located along the Black River in northeast Arkansas, Powhatan was once one of the most important river towns in the region during the 1800s. Steamboats regularly traveled the river carrying cotton, timber, and supplies, while travelers, merchants, and settlers passed through the town when Powhatan served as a busy county seat and trade center. Today, the preserved courthouse square, historic structures, and peaceful setting offer visitors a rare chance to experience what life was like in frontier-era Arkansas.

One of the park’s most fascinating buildings is the 1873 Powhatan Jail, a thick-walled brick structure that once held prisoners awaiting trial in the nearby courthouse. Built during a rough-and-tumble period of Arkansas history, the jail housed everyone from thieves and drifters to violent offenders during a time when law enforcement in small river towns could be unpredictable and dangerous. Visitors can still step inside the original iron-barred cells and imagine the harsh conditions prisoners faced more than 150 years ago. Stories of escapes, crimes, and long nights behind locked doors have made the jail one of the park’s most talked-about historic sites.
On Saturday, May 23, visitors can experience that history firsthand during “Let’s Go to Jail!” from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This open program invites guests inside the 1873 jail to learn about crime and punishment in 19th century Arkansas while exploring the building’s dark and fascinating history.
The day continues from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. with lawn bowling and historic card games on the courthouse grounds. These classic activities offer a relaxing way to spend the afternoon while learning games families enjoyed generations ago. It’s the perfect addition to a camping trip or weekend getaway in Arkansas’s scenic Delta region.
As evening falls, the atmosphere at Powhatan becomes even more unforgettable. From 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., visitors can join a Spooky Night Tour through the 1888 courthouse, the 1873 jail house, and the 1840s log cabin while hearing haunting stories connected to the buildings and the people who once lived and worked there. With quiet streets, historic buildings, and centuries of stories surrounding the old courthouse square, Powhatan Historic State Park offers a one-of-a-kind Arkansas experience where history truly comes alive after dark.
