Lawrence County is called the "Mother of Counties", because when it was established in 1815, four years before Arkansas became a territory. Its original boundaries covered a huge portion of what is now northern Arkansas and parts of southern Missouri
and originally spanned over 21,000 square miles and 31 modern-day counties. It is now home to many cities like, Powhatan, Walnut Ridge, and Hoxie who all contribute to the state in it's own way with natural landscapes, state parks and more. It is a unique, historical crossroads where the Ozark foothills meet the Delta.

Newport sits along historic Highway 67, famously known as the Rock ’n’ Roll Highway. In the 1950s, some of the biggest names in early rock and roll — including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis — traveled this route to reach shows across the Midwest. Today, Newport proudly honors that musical legacy, where a stretch of highway helped carry rock and roll into history. Did you ever catch one of these legends live along the Rock ’n’ Roll Highway?
