Fulton County Library in Salem: A Living Link to Library History
The Fulton County Library in Salem, Arkansas — located at 131 N. Pickren Street as part of the White River Regional Library system — still holds a connection to traditional library roots that many of us remember fondly.

While the library uses modern systems like its online catalog (DESTINY) for searching and checking out materials, it also keeps on file the classic Dewey Decimal card records — the old-school catalogue cards that show how books were organized by subject long before computers took over. The Dewey Decimal Classification remains the backbone of how library materials are arranged, helping staff and patrons locate books on everything from history to science.

For many locals and visitors, seeing these cards preserved is a nostalgic reminder of how libraries used to work and how knowledge has been organized for generations. It’s more than a catalog — it’s a piece of library history still respected in Salem’s community library.
In the heart of Salem, the

Fulton County Library blends tradition with technology—offering public computers, free Wi-Fi, and online eBooks, all available when you sign up for a free library card at the front desk.
