BATESVILLE, Arkansas — The Kresge Gallery at Lyon College is showcasing the artistic achievements of its students during the annual juried student art exhibition, on view through April 10 in the Kresge Gallery, located in the Alphin Building on the Lyon College campus, 2300 Highland Rd, Batesville.
A reception honoring the selected student artists and award recipients is set for Thursday, April 2, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., with an awards presentation scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The exhibition features 29 works by 14 students and highlights a diverse array of pieces created over the past academic year. The annual juried exhibition provides students with the opportunity to participate in a professional gallery setting, with works selected and recognized for artistic merit by an independent juror. Awards include the Presidential Purchase Award.
This year’s exhibition was curated by professional artist Sarah Nguyen, a mixed media artist whose work primarily focuses on paper. Nguyen’s practice centers on storytelling through hand-cut fiber panels and paintings.
In a statement accompanying the exhibition, Nguyen said the selected works explore the concept of home through a variety of artistic approaches.
“Through an exploration of mediums, including textile art, various print techniques, painting, collage and drawing, this exhibition explores how ‘home’ both functions as a physical shelter and an archive for generational memory,” Nguyen said. “This exhibit invites the viewer to find the sacred moments of domestic life and quiet observation. Celebrating the ordinary becoming extraordinary, these artists transform the familiar concerns of their everyday life into profound visual narratives.”
Nguyen added that the exhibition weaves together personal histories, romantic myths and regional motifs, demonstrating that the most resonant stories are often found close to home.
Kresge Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is available in the crescent lot in front of Brown Chapel and Fine Arts Building.
